先日、英語力のせいでヒヤッとした出来事がありました。ロンドンのユーストン駅から移動する予定で、切符には"Coach D, Seat 43"と書いてありました。コーチと呼ばれる長距離バスに乗ったことがあったので、このコーチもバスのことだと思い込んでしまいました。「バス乗り場Dから出発する長距離バスの43番の座席なんだな」と思い、乗り場を探すも、バスが来る気配はなく…。道行く人に尋ねたら、それは列車のことだと教えてくれました。実はコーチには車両という意味もあり、切符に書かれていた意味は「列車のD車の43番」でした。それに気付いたのが出発5分前。バス乗り場からホームまで走り、なんとかギリギリ間に合いました。英語力はもちろんのこと、事前に調べることや、本当に分からない時は誰かに尋ねることも大事だと思いました。
On the other day, I almost got in trouble due to my English skills. I intended to depart from Euston in London, and I had a ticket saying "Coach D, Seat 43". I mistakenly thought the coach on the ticket meant an express bus whose name was D, because I had taken an express bus called a coach before. So I waited for a bus, but of course, it didn't come. Then I asked a passersby and she told me it was not a bus but a train. The word coach has another meaning, which is a carriage. I realised that 5 minutes before the train leaves, so I ran to a platform and I barely caught the train. I thought it was important to look it up in a dictionary in advance or to ask people when in trouble, needless to say building up my vocabulary.
