Guy Fawkes Day

昨夜、突然花火が上がり驚きました。そこで思い出したのが、昨夜は11月5日、「ガイ・フォークス・デー」の花火だったのです！
イギリスでは、11月5日は「ガイ・フォークス・デー」と呼ばれています。1605年11月5日、ジェイムズ一世暗殺のため議会を爆破しようという陰謀がありました。事前に発覚し事件は未然に防ぐことができ、この出来事は「火薬陰謀事件」と呼ばれています。11月5日はその首謀者の一人、ガイ・フォークスに由来する記念日です。王の命が助かったことを祝い、各地で花火を上げたり、火を焚いたり、ガイ・フォークスの人形を燃やしたりするそうです。ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンのような小さな街でも、盛大に花火が上がっていました。知識としては知っていたけれど、いざ花火が上がってみるとびっくりしました。イギリスの花火は迫力がすごいです。（動画は音量に注意です。あと、窓越しに撮ったので、窓の汚れが見えてしまいますが、すみません。）
実はこの事件、シェイクスピア作品と関係があるんです。捕らえられたうちの一人、ヘンリー・ガーネットという人物が、裁判で二枚舌を使い（あいまいな供述をし）、シェイクスピアの『マクベス』に登場する門番がそれについて言及していると言われています。
作品への関連を知ると、歴史を学ぶのも面白く思えてきます。

I saw fireworks last night. I wondered why at first but then I realised that it was a Guy Fawkes Day yesterday!
On 5 November 1605, there was a plot trying to blow the Parliament and to kill King James I. It was prevented, and they celebrated that the King was safe. That is said to be the beginning of the Guy Fawkes Day. The day was named after Guy Fawkes, one of the authors of the plot. 
This incident is related to Shakespeare's works. Henry Garent, who also attempted to do this plot, spoke equivocally in the trial. His equivocation is mentioned in the porter's scene in Macbeth. (Caution: the short video below might be too loud.)

リア王＠彩の国さいたま芸術劇場大ホール

2026年5月23日、彩の国さいたま芸術劇場大ホールにて『リア王』を観劇（3時間40分、休憩込み）。 円形に盛り上がったステージを囲むように椅子が配置されていて、その場面に登場しない役者の一部は退場せず椅子に座っていました。座っている役者が、演技エリアで場面を進める役者（登場人物）たちを見守っているようにも、ただ傍観しているようにも見えました。舞台と客席の間で見る／見られるの二つがありますが、それに加えて舞台の上でも見る／見られるがあるというのは面白かったです。世界劇場（テアトラム・ムンディ）の概念を、舞台上で見られたと思いました。『リア王』には「人間、生まれてくるとき泣くのはな、この阿呆どもの舞台に引き出されたのが悲しいからだ」といった、芝居に例えた台詞があるので、なおさらです。 On 23 May 2026, I saw and heard King Lear by William Shakespeare at Saitama Arts Theater in Saitama. The stage had a round space for acting, and there were chairs around the space. Some of those who were not in the scenes sat on the chairs. They cast a glance at the scenes although they didn't intervene. Such glances on stage reminded me of a concept of theatrum mundi, especially in this production of King Lear , which includes lines such as 'When we are born, we cry that we are come to this great stage of fools.'

リチャード三世＠PARCO劇場

2026年5月30日、PARCO劇場にて『リチャード三世』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。 リチャード三世は、残虐な悪役として描かれることも、狡猾な政治家のように描かれることもあるキャラクターです。そんな中、今回のリチャード三世は、悪役、国王、政治家といった枠組みに当てはめなくても「言葉や表情や演技で人を動かせることに気持ち良くなっていった人物」に見えました。「なっていった」と書いたのは、場面が進むにつれて段階的にそう見えたからです。リチャード三世を演じた吉田羊さんは、2024年に ハムレット を演じていて、その時にも声の使い分けが特徴的だという印象を受けました。声や表情の使い分けは、登場人物が嘘をついたり、ふりをしたりする場合、普段の演技と比べて二重に大事なものとなりますが、それが上手かったと思います。 On 30 May 2026, I saw and heard Richard III  by William Shakespeare at Parco Theater in Tokyo. Richard can be labelled as a perfect villain, politically wise leader, and so on according to its direction in each production. This time, however, I could see Richard out of such framework, and I found Richard a person who simply enjoys the fact that he can manipulate others by words, expressions, and pretending. Henry VIII at Shakespeare's Globe

2022年10月6日、Shakespeare's Globeにて Henry VIII を観劇（2時間30分、休憩込み）。以下、ネタバレ注意です。 ウィリアム・シェイクスピアとジョン・フレッチャーによる共作ですが、公演プログラムには"in collaboration with Hannah Khalil"とあり、現代の作家による手が加えられていたので、アダプテーションと言えるかもしれません。原作にはない歌や台詞も聞こえてきました。そのような台詞の追加で気になったのは、 Much Ado About Nothing からの引用が二ヶ所あったということです。一つは離婚を言い渡された王妃キャサリンに対する歌の歌詞で、"Sigh no more, let them go"とバルサザーの歌が引用されていました。もう一つはまさにエリザベスを出産する場面でのアン・ブーリンが、苦しみながら"The world must be peopled"とベネディックの台詞を言っていたことです。 Much Ado About Nothing は今シーズンのグローブ座のラインナップに入っている作品なので、同時に観たら面白いだろうなと思いました。 (Caution: contains a spoiler.)
