イギリスの新年 / A Happy New Year from England

イギリスで新年を迎えました。イギリスでは、家で家族とカウントダウンをするか、外に出て皆で花火を見るかの二択が多いそうです。日本でも、家でテレビを見るか初詣に出掛けるかの二択が多数を占めると思います。新年の迎え方について、似ている点と異なる点をまとめてみようと思います。

蛍の光

私の場合は大家さんが家で過ごす派だったので、一緒にテレビを見たり、ボードゲームをしたりしながらカウントダウンを待ちました。家でゆっくり過ごすというのは日本の過ごし方と似ています。ですが、新年を迎えてすぐにテレビから流れてきた曲が、日本では『蛍の光』としてお馴染みの"Auld Lang Syne"で驚きました！日本では卒業式や閉店時など、何かの終わりを連想させる曲だと思うので、一年の始まりにこの曲が演奏されていたことは新鮮でした。大家さんいわく、これが伝統的な新年の始まりだそうです。

花火

家で過ごしたと言っても、窓から花火を見ることができました。日本では新年に花火ってなかなかないですよね（地域によってはあるのかな）。少し遠めなので小さいですが、動画をお見せします。

初日の出

1月1日の朝は初日の出を見ることができました。良い一年を迎えられそうな、清々しい朝でした。イギリスの冬は日の出が遅いので、天気さえ良ければ早起きしなくても見られます(笑) 日本では、初日の出は良い一年の始まりのシンボルですが、イギリスではそうでもないみたいです。日本の考え方を大家さんに伝えたら驚いていました。

そのように迎えた新年、素敵な一年になりますように！

A Happy New Year from England! I found some similarities and differences in how to celebrate New Year's Eve and New Year's Day between in England and in Japan.

(1) Auld Lang Syne: I watched a TV programme and played board games with my landlady and her family until midnight, which is similar to Japanese way of waiting for a new year. However, when the New Year came, "Auld Lang Syne" was performed in the TV programme. In Japan, the song reminds us of the end of something, such as graduation ceremony and closing hours of a store or a restaurant, so I was surprised at starting a new year with the song.

(2) Fireworks: I also saw fireworks from a window before and after midnight. In Japan, it is not common to have fireworks on New Year's Eve, so it was fresh to me.

(3) The first sunrise: In the morning, I could see the first sunrise of the year. In Japan, to see the first sunrise is a sign of good fortune of the year. Although my landlady said they didn't have such a way of thinking, I felt I could have a delightful year when I saw the sunrise.

陽気な幽霊＠シアタークリエ

2025年5月10日、シアタークリエにて『陽気な幽霊』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。嚙み合わない会話や嫉妬によって笑える喜劇でしたが、終わり方はしっとりとしたものでした。二人の妻の霊を見送ったチャールズが、寂しそうで、でも解放されたようにも見え、印象的でした。この場面が特に心に残ったのは何故か思い返してみると、2021年にロンドンの Harold Pinter Theatreで観た上演では、この場面がカットされていたからだと思います。その上演では、エルヴィラの霊をあの世に戻すことができず、ルースの霊まで呼び出してしまった、というところで終わっていたと思います。記憶が曖昧な部分もありますが、当時の観劇ノートを見返すと、マダム・アーカティの失敗が観客の笑いを誘って幕、と書いてあり、上演時間も40分ほど差があるので、そうだったはずです。『陽気な幽霊』を観るのはその時が初めてだったので、そのような終わり方をするものだと思い込んでいました。それなので、今回初めて観た最後の場面が、特に印象に残ったのだと思います。笑いと感動の両方を楽しめた舞台、観ることができて良かったです。 On 10 May 2025, I saw and heard Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward at Theatre Creation in Tokyo. The play, full of misunderstandings and jealous, was a hilarious comedy. However, the very last scene was a touching one. When the wives' spirits had gone, Charles looked sad but a little relieved. I also teach at universities. A Night At The Kabuki at Sadler's Wells Theatre

2022年9月24日、Sadler's Wells Theatreにて A Night At The Kabuki を観劇（2時間55分、休憩込み）。日本では『Q』として上演されている野田秀樹の作品です。日本人の活躍を海外で目撃できたら嬉しいなと思っていたので、今回のイギリス滞在中に日本のプロダクションを観るのが夢でした。それがかなって嬉しいです。ただ、現地の観客の反応を知りたいと思っていたのですが、観客のほとんどは日本人でした。ロンドンにはこんなに日本人がいるのか、と驚きました。物語は『ロミオとジュリエット』を源平合戦の文脈で描いたもので、音楽はクイーンという、見どころ満載の作品です。「もしロミオとジュリエットが本当は生きていたら？」という描き方で、シェイクスピアが書いた若いロミオとジュリエットと、創作である大人になったロミオとジュリエットが登場します。つまり、ロミオとジュリエットを演じる役者が4人いるのです。上演の前半はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』の筋書きをなぞるような構成でした。その部分では、大人になったロミオとジュリエットが二人の悲劇的な結末を変えようと、若い二人に介入するように登場します。上演の後半は創作で、実は生きていたロミオとジュリエットの物語です。その部分では、まだ見ぬ未来の運命を切り拓こうと、若いロミオとジュリエットが大人になった二人を見守ります。このような、前半と後半での視点の逆転が面白いと思いました。 On 24 September 2022, I saw and heard A Night At The Kabuki by Hideki Noda at Sadler's Wells Theatre.
