The Shakespeare Memorial Room

Fair is foul and foul is fairの部分です。

I visited the Library of Birmingham. The library is a nice place to visit for those who like Shakespeare because it has The Shakespeare Collection and there is The Shakespeare Memorial Room in the library.
The Collection includes more than 100,000 items such as books, production posters, photographs, and so on. They can be accessed by appointment. I didn't have a particular item to see in mind, so I only went to the Memorial Room without an appointment. It was open to public, and I enjoyed the room.
In a lift to the 9th floor, where The Memorial Room is located, I heard the Witches' line ('fair is foul and foul is fair' from Macbeth) from a speaker. That was a little scary but a good idea to feel Shakespeare's world.
The Memorial Room was smaller than I had expected. I thought it showed highlights of the Collection so that those who get interested can access by appointment later. Although it was a small room, I enjoyed some explanations. They included explanations about the collection and the room, about serving as a public library, about The First Folio and later Folios, about Shakespeare's life and career, and about Shakespeare as an icon. I also liked that there were explanations from perspectives of art, print, language, music, and stage directions, because such a wide variety shows that anyone can (or may not) enjoy Shakespeare from one's own perspectives.
In the highlights, I found a poster for a Japanese production. It was for Hamlet performed at Nissay Theatre in August 1972. I was glad that Shakespeare is popular in Japan, and I'm also glad to know that it is recognised in England.
The Memorial Room was beautifully decorated. I thought it was similar to a room at The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC.
I also enjoyed the view from the 9th floor. It was a lovely day ;)

Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe

2026年8月25日、Shakespeare's Globeにて Much Ado About Nothing を観劇(2時間25分、休憩込み)。 Much Ado About Nothing (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 25 August 2026, I saw and heard Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare's Globe. It was hilarious until the last scene. The audience laughed a lot, especially when Benedick and Beatrice were tricked, when Don Pedro was rejected by Beatrice (it was not a serious heartbreak th...

A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe

A Midsummer Night's Dream (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 25 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare's Globe. In this production, I found two distinct points that I had never seen in other productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream . One was that Hippolyta was pregnant and the other was that Titania's changeling boy appeared on stage as a baby. Hippolyta and Titania were played by one actress, so Titania with a baby looked like Hippolyta in the near future. I always like to find a connection between characters through casting strategies, so I fond this production interesting.

A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Other Place

2026年8月28日、ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンのThe Other Placeにて A Midsummer Night's Dream を観劇(90分、休憩なし)。 On 28 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As it was a co-production with the Unicorn Theatre, I thought it was an accessible version for children and young audiences. The word 'accessible' has many meanings, but I say so here based on two ideas below. First, it was a 90-minute-long pe...
