Midsummer Mechanicals at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

On 12 August 2022, I saw and heard Midsummer Mechanicals by Kerry Frampton and Ben Hales at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. It was a spin-off of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. In the plot, the mechanicals perform a new play in the following year of their performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe". Their new play is about a weaver and the fairy queen, which we know as a story about Bottom and Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The mechanicals' rehearsal has difficulties: Flute doesn't want to play a female role again, Snug was fired due to lack of his acting skills, and so forth. The audiences included many children, and I thought it was good for them to witness the process of play-making, because they can learn how difficult but interesting play-making is.
In this production, Snout was changed into a female role. When the mechanicals including female Snout try to perform a play, there is a discussion whether a female actor is acceptable or not. After all, Snout disguises as a man and appears on stage in the production. The script of Midsummer Mechanicals included such a theatrical convention of the Elizabethan drama, which I thought was educationally good.
The audiences' responses made me surprised. They, including children, had already known the story of Pyramus and Thisbe and the plot about a Donkey's head on Bottom. As they had knowledge on A Midsummer Night's Dream, it was possible to make a spin-off like this.
Probably I was a unique audience member (neither a child nor a parent), but I enjoyed the production a lot.

A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Other Place

2026年8月28日、ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンのThe Other Placeにて A Midsummer Night's Dream を観劇(90分、休憩なし)。 On 28 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As it was a co-production with the Unicorn Theatre, I thought it was an accessible version for children and young audiences. The word 'accessible' has many meanings, but I say so here based on two ideas below. First, it was a 90-minute-long pe...

A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare North Playhouse

On 27 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare North Playhouse in Liverpool. There were only four actors, but it was almost a full version of the play. When an actor played two or more roles in one scene, he used props to show which character he was playing. This way of expression reminded me of Much Ado About Nothing , which I saw at The Cockpit in London in 2022. In both productions, actors played two pairs of lovers as their core characters, and they were in charge of other characters too. Then, the two...

Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe

2026年8月25日、Shakespeare's Globeにて Much Ado About Nothing を観劇(2時間25分、休憩込み)。 Much Ado About Nothing (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 25 August 2026, I saw and heard Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare's Globe. It was hilarious until the last scene. The audience laughed a lot, especially when Benedick and Beatrice were tricked, when Don Pedro was rejected by Beatrice (it was not a serious heartbreak th...
