The BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall

2022年8月11日、Royal Albert HallにてBBC Promsを鑑賞しました。いつも観劇ばかりですが、たまには音楽鑑賞も良いですね。

BBC Proms

BBC Promsとは、BBCが主催するクラシック音楽のコンサートで、毎年7月から9月にかけて連日行われています。イギリス人の大家さんいわく、夏の風物詩だそうです。

一夜限りの演目

演劇好きな私は、「連日行われるクラシック音楽のコンサート」と聞いて、てっきり同じ楽曲が毎日演奏されるのだと思い込んでいました。演劇は、一つの作品がロングランで上演されたり、シーズン単位で上演されたりするからです。しかしBBC Promsは、毎日異なる楽曲が演奏されると知って驚きました（売店で売られている公演プログラムも日ごとにつくられたものでした！）。クラシック音楽ファンは、好きな楽曲を求めて複数回通うのでしょうか。私が参加した日は、エルガーのCello Concerto in E minor 27'とシベリウスのSymphony No. 2 in D major 43'が演奏されました。

会場となったRoyal Albert Hallは、5,000人以上収容できる、かなり広いホールです。1階のアリーナ席は立ち見席だったので、ロンドンのグローブ座と似ていると思いました。それを囲う着席型の座席は、4階席までありました。高さも広さもあり、似ているとはいえグローブ座よりはるかに大きい会場です。クラシック音楽のコンサートというと敷居が高いように思っていましたが、大勢で楽しむコンサートという意味では音楽フェスのような雰囲気でした。

On 11 August 2022, I enjoyed the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall. The BBC Proms is a series of classical music concerts. It is held from July to September everyday annually. My landlady said that it is like a summer festival.

I, a theatre-goer, mistakenly thought that the same programme is performed everyday in the BBC Proms, because it is common in theatre to perform the same production for several days, weeks, months, or even years. However, in the BBC Proms, they perform different programmes each day. I assume that classical music fans go to the BBC Proms several times if they have many favourite programmes. On the day I attend, Elgar's Cello Concerto in E minor 27' and Sibelius's Symphony No. 2 in D major 43' were performed.

The venue, Royal Albert Hall, is an amphitheatre (although it's not a theatre but a hall) and looks like Shakespeare's Globe. However, it's much larger than the Globe. When I enjoyed the concert with a large number of audiences, I felt that it was like a music festival rather than an upscale concert.

陽気な幽霊＠シアタークリエ

2025年5月10日、シアタークリエにて『陽気な幽霊』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。嚙み合わない会話や嫉妬によって笑える喜劇でしたが、終わり方はしっとりとしたものでした。二人の妻の霊を見送ったチャールズが、寂しそうで、でも解放されたようにも見え、印象的でした。この場面が特に心に残ったのは何故か思い返してみると、2021年にロンドンの Harold Pinter Theatreで観た上演では、この場面がカットされていたからだと思います。その上演では、エルヴィラの霊をあの世に戻すことができず、ルースの霊まで呼び出してしまった、というところで終わっていたと思います。記憶が曖昧な部分もありますが、当時の観劇ノートを見返すと、マダム・アーカティの失敗が観客の笑いを誘って幕、と書いてあり、上演時間も40分ほど差があるので、そうだったはずです。『陽気な幽霊』を観るのはその時が初めてだったので、そのような終わり方をするものだと思い込んでいました。それなので、今回初めて観た最後の場面が、特に印象に残ったのだと思います。笑いと感動の両方を楽しめた舞台、観ることができて良かったです。 On 10 May 2025, I saw and heard Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward at Theatre Creation in Tokyo. The play, full of misunderstandings and jealous, was a hilarious comedy. However, the very last scene was a touching one. When the wives' spirits had gone, Charles looked sad but a little relieved. A Night At The Kabuki at Sadler's Wells Theatre

2022年9月24日、Sadler's Wells Theatreにて A Night At The Kabuki を観劇（2時間55分、休憩込み）。日本では『Q』として上演されている野田秀樹の作品です。日本人の活躍を海外で目撃できたら嬉しいなと思っていたので、今回のイギリス滞在中に日本のプロダクションを観るのが夢でした。それがかなって嬉しいです。ただ、現地の観客の反応を知りたいと思っていたのですが、観客のほとんどは日本人でした。ロンドンにはこんなに日本人がいるのか、と驚きました。物語は『ロミオとジュリエット』を源平合戦の文脈で描いたもので、音楽はクイーンという、見どころ満載の作品です。「もしロミオとジュリエットが本当は生きていたら？」という描き方で、シェイクスピアが書いた若いロミオとジュリエットと、創作である大人になったロミオとジュリエットが登場します。つまり、ロミオとジュリエットを演じる役者が4人いるのです。上演の前半はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』の筋書きをなぞるような構成でした。その部分では、大人になったロミオとジュリエットが二人の悲劇的な結末を変えようと、若い二人に介入するように登場します。上演の後半は創作で、実は生きていたロミオとジュリエットの物語です。その部分では、まだ見ぬ未来の運命を切り拓こうと、若いロミオとジュリエットが大人になった二人を見守ります。このような、前半と後半での視点の逆転が面白いと思いました。 On 24 September 2022, I saw and heard A Night At The Kabuki by Hideki Noda at Sadler's Wells Theatre.
