Mischief Festival 2022 at The Other Place

Royal Shakespeare Theatreの別館であるThe Other Placeにて、二つの芝居を観劇しました。Mischief Festivalという、現代劇を上演するシリーズで、Ivy Tiller: Vicar's Daughter, Squirrel KillerとO, Island!の二本を観劇しました。どちらも、ここでの上演が初演という、まさにコンテンポラリーな現代劇でした。
劇場内の公演プログラム売り場では、公演プログラムと台本がセットになった本が売られていました。それで5ポンドという安さなので驚きです。これが初演なので、キャストとスタッフの情報と台本を一緒に手に入れることができて良かったです。
公演プログラムによると、両方の作品に出演している役者もいるとのことでした。日替わりで上演されたり、一日に二本上演されたりするので、その両方に出演するというのは技量のいることだと思います。そのようなローテーションは、ロンドンのグローブ座のものと似ていると思いました。

Ivy Tiller: Vicar's Daughter, Squirrel Killer
2022年10月26日、The Other PlaceにてIvy Tiller: Vicar's Daughter, Squirrel Killerを観劇（1時間25分、休憩なし）。タイトルが韻を踏んでいて面白いと思いました。タイトルロールのIvy Tillerは、在来種のキタリスを守るために外来種のトウブハイイロリスを駆逐しようとする女性です。リスを撃つ場面はグロテスクに思えましたが、周りの観客はそこに目を向けるのではなく、目的に対して一生懸命すぎるが故に周囲と噛み合わないIvyの姿を見て笑っていました。そこに注目するのか、と観客の受容について驚きました。

O, Island!
2022年10月26日、The Other PlaceにてO, Island!を観劇（1時間25分、休憩なし）。洪水によって島として孤立してしまった村についての物語でした。孤立すると、誰がリーダーになるのか、リーダーの判断は正しいのか、その他の人物はどのような役割を持つのか、他の人物内で派閥ができるのか…など、考えるべき点が出てきます。ウィリアム・ゴールディングの『蠅の王』のような作品だと思いました。

On 26 October 2022, I saw and heard two plays as a part of Mischief Festival 2022: Ivy Tiller: Vicar's Daughter, Squirrel Killer and O, Island! at The Other Place. Both of them were contemporary plays. 
In the theatre, they sold a book which combines a programme and a script. It cost only five pounds! I was satisfied to get such an informative book.
According to the programme, some actors joined both of the plays. Such a rotation reminded me that of Shakespeare's Globe.
Ivy Tiller: Vicar's Daughter, Squirrel Killer is a play by Bea Roberts. I like the title, which is rhyming. The play is about a woman, Ivy Tiller, who tries to oust the invasive grey squirrels and to restore the native red squirrels. I thought when she shot grey squirrels was grotesque, but other audiences rather laughed at Ivy, who was so obsessed with her aim and incompatible with other characters. I was surprised at the difference between me and other audiences regarding reception.
O, Island! is a play by Nina Segal. The story is about a village, which becomes isolated as an island because of a flood. When being isolated, there are a lot of matters to be considered: who to be a leader, whether the leader's decision is right, what kind of roles other people should have, whether people make factions, and so forth. It reminded me of Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

陽気な幽霊＠シアタークリエ

2025年5月10日、シアタークリエにて『陽気な幽霊』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。 嚙み合わない会話や嫉妬によって笑える喜劇でしたが、終わり方はしっとりとしたものでした。二人の妻の霊を見送ったチャールズが、寂しそうで、でも解放されたようにも見え、印象的でした。この場面が特に心に残ったのは何故か思い返してみると、2021年にロンドンの Harold Pinter Theatreで観た上演 では、この場面がカットされていたからだと思います。その上演では、エルヴィラの霊をあの世に戻すことができず、ルースの霊まで呼び出してしまった、というところで終わっていたと思います。記憶が曖昧な部分もありますが、当時の観劇ノートを見返すと、マダム・アーカティの失敗が観客の笑いを誘って幕、と書いてあり、上演時間も40分ほど差があるので、そうだったはずです。『陽気な幽霊』を観るのはその時が初めてだったので、そのような終わり方をするものだと思い込んでいました。それなので、今回初めて観た最後の場面が、特に印象に残ったのだと思います。 笑いと感動の両方を楽しめた舞台、観ることができて良かったです。 On 10 May 2025, I saw and heard Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward at Theatre Creation in Tokyo.  The play, full of misunderstandings and jealous, was a hilarious comedy. A Night At The Kabuki at Sadler's Wells Theatre

2022年9月24日、Sadler's Wells Theatreにて A Night At The Kabuki を観劇 （2時間55分、休憩込み） 。日本では『Q』として上演されている野田秀樹の作品です。 日本人の活躍を海外で目撃できたら嬉しいなと思っていたので、今回のイギリス滞在中に日本のプロダクションを観るのが夢でした。それがかなって嬉しいです。ただ、現地の観客の反応を知りたいと思っていたのですが、観客のほとんどは日本人でした。ロンドンにはこんなに日本人がいるのか、と驚きました。 物語は『ロミオとジュリエット』を源平合戦の文脈で描いたもので、音楽はクイーンという、見どころ満載の作品です。「もしロミオとジュリエットが本当は生きていたら？」という描き方で、シェイクスピアが書いた若いロミオとジュリエットと、創作である大人になったロミオとジュリエットが登場します。つまり、ロミオとジュリエットを演じる役者が4人いるのです。 上演の前半はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』の筋書きをなぞるような構成でした。その部分では、大人になったロミオとジュリエットが二人の悲劇的な結末を変えようと、若い二人に介入するように登場します。上演の後半は創作で、実は生きていたロミオとジュリエットの物語です。その部分では、まだ見ぬ未来の運命を切り拓こうと、若いロミオとジュリエットが大人になった二人を見守ります。このような、前半と後半での視点の逆転が面白いと思いました。 On 24 September 2022, I saw and heard A Night At The Kabuki by Hideki Noda at Sadler's Wells Theatre.
