Henry V at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse

2022年11月19日、Sam Wanamaker PlayhouseにてHenry Vを観劇（2時間20分、休憩込み）。以下、ネタバレ注意です。

この上演は、途中まで入退場用のドアがカーテンでふさがれていて、役者は全員舞台上の椅子に座り、登場する時に「誰々登場」とト書きを言って立ち上がり、演技に入るというやり方で上演されていました。役者たちは台本こそ持っていなかったものの、ト書きを読むという試みは朗読劇に近い上演だと思いました。今回の上演では、序詞役の存在がカットされていました。観客の想像力を願うプロローグがなかった分、役者自身がト書きを読むということで補われていたように思えました。

On 19 November 2022, I saw and heard Henry V by William Shakespeare at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Until a certain point of the play, they didn't use doors and all of the actors were on stage. They were sitting on chairs on the stage, and when a character entered, the actor read the stage direction to explain the character enters. Although they didn't have scripts on their hands, the production was somewhat close to play-reading. In this production, the Chorus didn't appear. When the Chorus, who asks audiences to have imagination, doesn't appear, it may be a plausible choice to make actors read stage directions.

陽気な幽霊＠シアタークリエ

2025年5月10日、シアタークリエにて『陽気な幽霊』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。嚙み合わない会話や嫉妬によって笑える喜劇でしたが、終わり方はしっとりとしたものでした。二人の妻の霊を見送ったチャールズが、寂しそうで、でも解放されたようにも見え、印象的でした。この場面が特に心に残ったのは何故か思い返してみると、2021年にロンドンの Harold Pinter Theatreで観た上演では、この場面がカットされていたからだと思います。その上演では、エルヴィラの霊をあの世に戻すことができず、ルースの霊まで呼び出してしまった、というところで終わっていたと思います。記憶が曖昧な部分もありますが、当時の観劇ノートを見返すと、マダム・アーカティの失敗が観客の笑いを誘って幕、と書いてあり、上演時間も40分ほど差があるので、そうだったはずです。『陽気な幽霊』を観るのはその時が初めてだったので、そのような終わり方をするものだと思い込んでいました。それなので、今回初めて観た最後の場面が、特に印象に残ったのだと思います。笑いと感動の両方を楽しめた舞台、観ることができて良かったです。 On 10 May 2025, I saw and heard Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward at Theatre Creation in Tokyo. The play, full of misunderstandings and jealous, was a hilarious comedy. However, the very last scene was a touching one. When the wives' spirits had gone, Charles looked sad but a little relieved. A Night At The Kabuki at Sadler's Wells Theatre

2022年9月24日、Sadler's Wells Theatreにて A Night At The Kabuki を観劇（2時間55分、休憩込み）。日本では『Q』として上演されている野田秀樹の作品です。日本人の活躍を海外で目撃できたら嬉しいなと思っていたので、今回のイギリス滞在中に日本のプロダクションを観るのが夢でした。それがかなって嬉しいです。ただ、現地の観客の反応を知りたいと思っていたのですが、観客のほとんどは日本人でした。ロンドンにはこんなに日本人がいるのか、と驚きました。物語は『ロミオとジュリエット』を源平合戦の文脈で描いたもので、音楽はクイーンという、見どころ満載の作品です。「もしロミオとジュリエットが本当は生きていたら？」という描き方で、シェイクスピアが書いた若いロミオとジュリエットと、創作である大人になったロミオとジュリエットが登場します。つまり、ロミオとジュリエットを演じる役者が4人いるのです。上演の前半はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』の筋書きをなぞるような構成でした。その部分では、大人になったロミオとジュリエットが二人の悲劇的な結末を変えようと、若い二人に介入するように登場します。上演の後半は創作で、実は生きていたロミオとジュリエットの物語です。その部分では、まだ見ぬ未来の運命を切り拓こうと、若いロミオとジュリエットが大人になった二人を見守ります。このような、前半と後半での視点の逆転が面白いと思いました。 On 24 September 2022, I saw and heard A Night At The Kabuki by Hideki Noda at Sadler's Wells Theatre.
