自己紹介 / Introducing myself

改めまして、Rena Endoです。所属が変わったので自己紹介を更新します。

「イギリスに留学中の演劇好きな大学院生」を名乗っていましたが、イギリスで修士課程を終え、帰国しました。「日本で博士課程に取り組む演劇好きな大学院生」になりました。今後は観劇の感想、美術展や旅行などの趣味について、そして研究活動の報告といった投稿が多くなると思います。日本語と英語の両方で書こうと思うので、英語圏の友人にも読んでもらえたら嬉しいです。特に観劇の感想について、日本にはこんな舞台作品があるんだよ！と伝えたいです。

留学生活と海外生活のカテゴリーは、今後は更新しなくなりますが、イギリス留学中に投稿したものは残しておきます。これから留学を考えている方や、イギリスでの生活に興味のある方は、ぜひ覗いてみてくださいね。

Hello, I'm Rena Endo from Japan, who like going to theatres and major Shakespeare's plays. I was an MA student in England, but now I'm a doctoral student in Japan. Since I went back to Japan and my position changed from an MA student to a doctoral student, I rewrite this "Introducing myself" page.

As such a postgraduate student, I will write posts for categories of "Theatre", "Interest", and "Research / Activity" in this blog from now on. The posts will be written both in Japanese and in English, so I'll be happy if English-speaking people read my blog. Especially, I'd like to tell what happens in Japanese theatre industry these days.

I won't post to categories of "Study Abroad" and "Living Abroad" anymore since I'm in Japan now, but the past posts in these categories don't disappear. I hope those posts would be read by those who think of studying abroad in the future and those who are interested in life in England.

101分のペリクリーズ＠シアター風姿花伝

2026年3月5日、シアター風姿花伝にて『101分のペリクリーズ』を観劇（約100分、休憩なし）。以下、ネタバレ注意です。壮大なペリクリーズの物語を約100分にまとめるということで、台詞や場面のカットがありました。その中で大きな変更点だと思ったのは、第3幕でのセリモンとセーザのやりとりがカットされていたことです。それにより、セーザが実は生きていたということは観客にも知らされず、第5幕でペリクリーズやマリーナが知るまで隠されていました。情報量において観客が優位に立つのはよくあることですが、今回の演出は、ペリクリーズやマリーナが長い喪失の後で再会の感動を味わうのと同時に（同様に）観客もクライマックスを受け取れるのだと思いました。セリモンとセーザの場面のカットは、「物足りない」ではなく「ラストが劇的に見える」と思うやり方でした。また、種明かしのタイミングの特異性は『冬物語』のハーマイオニを思わせるものでした。それなので、このカンパニーで『冬物語』を観てみたいとも思いました。 (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 5 March 2026, I saw and heard Pericles by William Shakespeare at Theater Fuusikaden in Tokyo. They cut some lines and scenes to make the production shorter. I thought the biggest change they made was that Cerimon and Thaisa didn't appear in the middle of the play. Because of this, audience members (if they hadn't known the plot beforehand) didn't know Thaisa survived until Pericles and Marina knew that at the end of the play. レイディ・ベス＠日生劇場

2026年3月7日、日生劇場にて『レイディ・ベス』を観劇（3時間5分、休憩込み）。レイディ・ベス（エリザベス一世）が女王として即位するまでを描いたミュージカルです。「歴史ロマン」と謳われていて、プロットは確かにそうなのですが、細かい台詞や演技に目を向けると、家族への想いが丁寧に描かれた作品だと思いました。例えば、メアリーがベスを恐れるのは、王位を脅かす存在ということもありますが、ヘンリー八世、キャサリン・オブ・アラゴン、アン・ブーリンをめぐる家族の問題も背景にあったと思います。また、母のことを裏切り者と思っていたベスが、次第に母への考え方を変えていく様子も、主人公の心情の変化という点で、作品における重要な要素だったと思います。そのようなところに目を向けると、肩書きは「公」の立場であるメアリーやベスが、「私」的な部分を見せてくれたようで、心あたたまるミュージカルだったと思います。ちなみに、この家族を公／私の両方で見たくなるのは、2019年にシドニーで The Last Wife を観劇した時と同じだと気付きました。 On 7 March 2026, I saw and heard Lady Bess at Nissay Theatre in Tokyo. It was a musical about Lady Bess (Elizabeth I) before her reign. In that sense, it was about the history, but I thought it was also about a family. For example, Mary Tudor was afraid of Bess because Mary saw Bess as a threat. However, there was not only a political view but also a family matter: the relationship among Henry (their father), Catherine (Mary's mother), and Anne (Bess's mother). 十二夜＠シアターχ

2026年2月17日、シアターχにて『十二夜』を観劇（2時間45分、休憩込み）。舞台セットの使い方、特に場面の転換が良かったです。90度ずつ（場面によっては45度ずつ）回転させることで、船にも屋敷にも庭にも見える舞台セットは万能だと思いました。特に好きだと思ったのは、第1幕第1場から第2場に移り変わる時でした。青い衣装を身につけた役者たちが、船に見立てたセットを動かすことで、難破を表現していたと思います。このような演出は、2023年に同じシアターχで上演された『ペリクリーズ』を思い出させるものでした。双子の再会の場面はいつも感動するのですが、今回は双子が海で離れ離れになる場面からグッときました。それはきっと、上記のような場面転換が上手く、役者の演技も相まって、ヴァイオラとセバスチャンの運命が動くことにドキリとしてしまったからだと思います。 On 17 February 2026, I saw and heard Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare at Theatre χ in Tokyo. I liked a versatile stage set; it looked like a ship, a house, or a garden, depending on its angle. Between act 1 scene 1 and scene 2 in particular, actors in blue, who looked like waves, moved the set to show a scene of a shipwreck. This direction reminded me of another production, Pericles , which was performed at the same venue in 2023.
