(Caution: contains a spoiler.)
On 10 November 2023, I saw and heard The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. It was a stage adaptation of a novel by Haruki Murakami. I had read the novel, and I had a chance to visit and see the rehearsal, so my theatrical experience this time was with background knowledge.
(1) From page to stage: When I read the novel, my first impression of it was that the narrative was so detailed. The first person narrative by Toru, a protagonist, was like a stream of consciousness to some extent. Then, I thought Toru would have a lot of soliloquies when performed on stage. However, I was wrong about it. The stage production relied on music and dance to express Toru's thoughts and reminiscence. In such a speedy production, only Mamiya, who visits Toru, had a long soliloquy. He spoke almost 20 minutes! The scriptwriter and the creative team cherished the scene, I think.
(2) From rehearsal to performance: I was appointed as a reporter by HoriPro Inc., and I had a chance to visit and see a rehearsal. The report of the rehearsal was published here (English follows Japanese).
Regarding a scene when Toru and Kumiko talk on the phone, which was one of the scenes that I saw at a rehearsal, I perceived improvements from a rehearsal to a performance. For example, in a rehearsal, the actor playing Toru and the director tried to find a way to express Toru heading to the phone. I liked how the actor did it in the performance at a theatre. Also,  he sometimes spoke his lines more strongly in the performance than he had practiced in a rehearsal. Then I thought that actors' way of doing could be changed little by little after practice and consultation in rehearsals.
The production made me think a lot. It stimulated my brain!

A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare North Playhouse

On 27 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare North Playhouse in Liverpool. There were only four actors, but it was almost a full version of the play. When an actor played two or more roles in one scene, he used props to show which character he was playing. This way of expression reminded me of Much Ado About Nothing , which I saw at The Cockpit in London in 2022. In both productions, actors played two pairs of lovers as their core characters, and they were in charge of other characters too. Then, the two...

The Comedy About Spies at Adelphi Theatre

2026年8月26日、Adelphi Theatreにて The Comedy About Spies を観劇(2時間35分、休憩込み)。 The Play That Goes Wrong On 26 August 2026, I saw and heard The Comedy About Spies  by Mischief at Adelphi Theatre. I liked The Play That Goes Wrong (2022), and I found out that the company is performing The Comedy About Spies this year, so I was thrilled to see this play in London. Indeed, it was hilarious as (and more than) I had expected! There are many serious plays and films about spies, but I had never seen a comedy about them, so I was surprised at its funny scenes...

A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Other Place

2026年8月28日、ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンのThe Other Placeにて A Midsummer Night's Dream を観劇(90分、休憩なし)。 On 28 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As it was a co-production with the Unicorn Theatre, I thought it was an accessible version for children and young audiences. The word 'accessible' has many meanings, but I say so here based on two ideas below. First, it was a 90-minute-long pe...
