On 11 May 2024, I saw and heard Il servitore di due padroni by Carlo Goldoni at Honda Theater in Tokyo.
It included misunderstandings among characters and disguise, so I liked the plot, for I like such plays by Shakespeare, such as A Comedy of Errors and Twelfth Night
Truffaldino, who serves two masters, often mistakes orders by a master for ones by the other master. Each master doesn't know that he has another master, so there's confusion. Unlike characters on stage, audiences know why there's confusion, so the advantage makes the play funny. I think such a comedy is similar to A Comedy of Errors.
One of the heroines, Beatrice, disguises as a man and comes to Venice to follow her lover. This plot reminds me of Julia in The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Jessica in The Merchant of Venice (Jessica's disguise is for eloping, though). Also, when she mistakenly thinks her lover died and grieves, she looks like Imogen in Cymbeline and Rosalind in As You Like It. In addition, when Beatrice hesitates to fight because she is a woman, the scene is similar to that of Viola and Sir Andrew in Twelfth Night.
I liked the plot, but I also liked the direction in this production. Among classical costumes, makeup, and music, I thought their costumes were interesting. They were in white, but each character had coloured decorations. Family members had the same colour for their decorations, so it was visually understandable. Truffaldino had colourful patches, including other characters' colours. As he was commedia dell'arte's Arlecchino, he was a catalyst indeed but also looked so because of the colours of his costume.
I liked both of the plot and the direction.

On 1 August 2026, I saw and heard Agatha at Yomiuri Otemachi Hall in Tokyo.  It was a Korean musical translated into Japanese, inspired by the actual incident when Agatha Christie mysteriously went missing. The musical itself was like a mystery to be solved by the audience, but I rather liked the characterisation of Agatha.  Agatha Christie (as an actual writer, or as a character in the production at least) is more interested in 'why' culprit...

Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe

2026年8月25日、Shakespeare's Globeにて Much Ado About Nothing を観劇(2時間25分、休憩込み)。 Much Ado About Nothing (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 25 August 2026, I saw and heard Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare's Globe. It was hilarious until the last scene. The audience laughed a lot, especially when Benedick and Beatrice were tricked, when Don Pedro was rejected by Beatrice (it was not a serious heartbreak th...

ricca ricca festa 2026

I enjoyed an annual, international theatre festival for children and young people called Ricca Ricca Festa in Okinawa. I saw three performances and attended a symposium. On 27 July, I saw a puppet show titled The Puppy Siblings, Chip and Choco . Physically speaking, puppets are just materials without emotions unlike human beings. Nevertheless, the puppets in the show looked to have emotions and their facial expressions seemed to change according to lines and scenes. Puppeteers were so skillful that puppets looked as if they were alive. Also, audiences were good at seeing them as lively puppies...
