Peter Pan at The Attic Theatre

2022年6月5日、The Attic TheatreにてPeter Panを観劇（1時間35分、休憩込み）。予想通り家族連れが目立ちましたが、子供の頃好きだった作品なので、一人でも観に行くことにしました。

前回訪れた時の記事にも書いたように、The Attic Theatreは小規模な劇場です。そのような劇場で、スペクタクルな作品をどのように演出するのか、気になっていました。演出で最も興味深かったのはティンカーベルの表現方法です。ティンカーベル役の役者はおらず、光で表現していました。ティンカーベルが現れたり消えたりするのが一瞬で、マジックのようでした。はじめは他の役者たちが光るおもちゃか何かを持ってスイッチをオンオフにしているのかと思いましたが、役者たちの手元を見ても何も持っていませんでした。次に考えたのは、役者たちの指先に蛍光塗料を塗り、照明を当てて表現していたのかということでしたが、天井を見てもそのような仕掛けはなさそうでした。どのような方法でティンカーベルを見せていたのか、最後まで分かりませんでしたが、タネが分からないからこそ、子供たちも大人の観客も夢中になって観ていました。

On 5 June 2022, I saw and heard Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie at The Attic Theatre. It was a family-friendly play but I went to see it on my own, because the story was one of my favourites.

As I wrote in a former post, The Attic Theatre is a small venue. I was interested in how they would perform the spectacle play at such a small theatre. The most interesting thing for me was how they expressed Tinker Bell. It was expressed by light instead of by a human actor. She (the light) appeared and disappeared suddenly, so I thought it was like magic. At first, I assumed that actors had a small toy and switch it on and off, but I found nothing in their hands when I gazed the actors. Then I thought that they put fluorescent paint on their fingers, but I couldn't find the light for that on the ceiling. Since we had no idea how they showed Tinker Bell, it looked magical and that attracted audiences.

陽気な幽霊＠シアタークリエ

2025年5月10日、シアタークリエにて『陽気な幽霊』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。嚙み合わない会話や嫉妬によって笑える喜劇でしたが、終わり方はしっとりとしたものでした。二人の妻の霊を見送ったチャールズが、寂しそうで、でも解放されたようにも見え、印象的でした。この場面が特に心に残ったのは何故か思い返してみると、2021年にロンドンの Harold Pinter Theatreで観た上演では、この場面がカットされていたからだと思います。その上演では、エルヴィラの霊をあの世に戻すことができず、ルースの霊まで呼び出してしまった、というところで終わっていたと思います。記憶が曖昧な部分もありますが、当時の観劇ノートを見返すと、マダム・アーカティの失敗が観客の笑いを誘って幕、と書いてあり、上演時間も40分ほど差があるので、そうだったはずです。『陽気な幽霊』を観るのはその時が初めてだったので、そのような終わり方をするものだと思い込んでいました。それなので、今回初めて観た最後の場面が、特に印象に残ったのだと思います。笑いと感動の両方を楽しめた舞台、観ることができて良かったです。 On 10 May 2025, I saw and heard Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward at Theatre Creation in Tokyo. The play, full of misunderstandings and jealous, was a hilarious comedy. However, the very last scene was a touching one. When the wives' spirits had gone, Charles looked sad but a little relieved. A Night At The Kabuki at Sadler's Wells Theatre

2022年9月24日、Sadler's Wells Theatreにて A Night At The Kabuki を観劇（2時間55分、休憩込み）。日本では『Q』として上演されている野田秀樹の作品です。日本人の活躍を海外で目撃できたら嬉しいなと思っていたので、今回のイギリス滞在中に日本のプロダクションを観るのが夢でした。それがかなって嬉しいです。ただ、現地の観客の反応を知りたいと思っていたのですが、観客のほとんどは日本人でした。ロンドンにはこんなに日本人がいるのか、と驚きました。物語は『ロミオとジュリエット』を源平合戦の文脈で描いたもので、音楽はクイーンという、見どころ満載の作品です。「もしロミオとジュリエットが本当は生きていたら？」という描き方で、シェイクスピアが書いた若いロミオとジュリエットと、創作である大人になったロミオとジュリエットが登場します。つまり、ロミオとジュリエットを演じる役者が4人いるのです。上演の前半はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』の筋書きをなぞるような構成でした。その部分では、大人になったロミオとジュリエットが二人の悲劇的な結末を変えようと、若い二人に介入するように登場します。上演の後半は創作で、実は生きていたロミオとジュリエットの物語です。その部分では、まだ見ぬ未来の運命を切り拓こうと、若いロミオとジュリエットが大人になった二人を見守ります。このような、前半と後半での視点の逆転が面白いと思いました。 On 24 September 2022, I saw and heard A Night At The Kabuki by Hideki Noda at Sadler's Wells Theatre.
