(Caution: contains a spoiler.)
On 8 March 2023, I saw and heard Hamlet by William Shakespeare at Setagaya Public Theatre in Tokyo.
It was directed by Mansai Nomura, a famous Kyogen actor. Then, the production had a mixture of Japanese elements and Western elements. Costumes and sound effects looked and sounded Japanese, but Christian elements were Western. The play-within-a-play was in accordance with Japanese traditional performance, such as puppet theatre and Kabuki. On the other hand, the scene when Hamlet and Laertes fought with swords looked like Western sword-fighting.
Speaking of the play-within-a-play, the reputation of travelling players was changed in this production. In Shakespeare's original, Rosencrantz says they are struggling because a children's company is becoming popular, which is reflecting a fact in London in Shakespeare's time. In this production, however, there was no mention on children's company, and instead, there was an explanation that the players had difficult time during a pandemic, which was reflecting our modern world. This change reminded me of when I saw Hamlet at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in London last year. I'd like to accept the change rather than casting a question on its authenticity, because I think it is plausible to include modern (or Japanese) elements in a production when Shakespeare's original reflects something well-known by his contemporary audiences.

A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Other Place

2026年8月28日、ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンのThe Other Placeにて A Midsummer Night's Dream を観劇(90分、休憩なし)。 On 28 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As it was a co-production with the Unicorn Theatre, I thought it was an accessible version for children and young audiences. The word 'accessible' has many meanings, but I say so here based on two ideas below. First, it was a 90-minute-long pe...

The Comedy About Spies at Adelphi Theatre

2026年8月26日、Adelphi Theatreにて The Comedy About Spies を観劇(2時間35分、休憩込み)。 The Play That Goes Wrong On 26 August 2026, I saw and heard The Comedy About Spies  by Mischief at Adelphi Theatre. I liked The Play That Goes Wrong (2022), and I found out that the company is performing The Comedy About Spies this year, so I was thrilled to see this play in London. Indeed, it was hilarious as (and more than) I had expected! There are many serious plays and films about spies, but I had never seen a comedy about them, so I was surprised at its funny scenes...

A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare North Playhouse

On 27 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare North Playhouse in Liverpool. There were only four actors, but it was almost a full version of the play. When an actor played two or more roles in one scene, he used props to show which character he was playing. This way of expression reminded me of Much Ado About Nothing , which I saw at The Cockpit in London in 2022. In both productions, actors played two pairs of lovers as their core characters, and they were in charge of other characters too. Then, the two...
