2024年12月7日、新国立劇場小劇場にて『ロミオとジュリエット』を観劇（1時間50分、休憩なし）。新国立劇場演劇研修所第18期生の公演でした（修了者も2名出演していました）。以下、ネタバレ注意です。
現代社会の暗い側面を映したような演出でした。一番驚いたのは、ロザラインの名前が出てこなかったところです。それにより、冒頭のロミオの憂鬱が、恋によるものではなく、現代の若者の閉塞感のように見えました。
他の登場人物にも、やり場のない思いが表れていたと思います。例えば、暴力を止める大公自身が暴力を振るうので、どうしようもない社会という感じがしました。
このような演出は、2021年にロンドンのグローブ座で観たRomeo and Julietと似ていると思いました。どちらの上演も、人間の愚かさや現代社会の問題を突き付けてくるようなものだったので、見ていて悲しくなりましたが、それは嫌な上演という意味ではなく、観客が考えたり行動したりするきっかけになる可能性があるという点で、良い上演だったと思います。

On 7 December 2024, I saw and heard Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare at New National Theatre Tokyo.
It seemed to me that this production reflected current social issues. To my surprise, there was no mention to Rosaline. Then, Romeo's melancholy in the beginning of the play looked like frustrations that today's young adults may have, rather than the melancholy because of love.
Other characters also had frustrations, which was not surprising in this production with full of violence. Prince Escalus himself was violent while he told the Capulets and the Montagues to stop fighting.
Such a production reflecting human's weakness and social problems was similar to Romeo and Juliet (2021), which I saw at Shakespeare's Globe in London. Both productions made me sad because we had to face some dark sides of the modern society, but it didn't mean they were bad productions. Rather, they gave us opportunities to take an action or at least think.
