2024年12月14日、彩の国さいたま芸術劇場大ホールにて『夏の夜の夢』を観劇（2時間20分、休憩込み）。
惚れ薬の魔力を解く場面が印象的でした。ライサンダーの心をヘレナからハーミアに戻すために、魔力を解く草の汁がライサンダーの目に絞られますが、今回の上演では、ディミートリアスの目にも絞られていたので驚きました。それでは二人がハーミアを取り合う状態に戻るのではないかと思いましたが、魔力が解かれた後も、ディミートリアスはヘレナを慕っていました。シェイクスピアの原文は、ディミートリアスとヘレナが結ばれるのは真実の愛ではなく惚れ薬のためではないかという疑問が残る終わり方ですが、その疑問に対する演出だったのではないかと思います。『夏の夜の夢』が始まる前の話として、ディミートリアスとヘレナは恋仲にあったので、その時点まで戻るという意味で、魔力が解かれたのではないかと想像します。
On 14 December 2024, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Saitama Arts Theater in Saitama.
The most interesting scene was when Puck used the herb to amend the confusion among Athenian lovers. In Shakespeare's text, Puck crushes it into Lysander's eyes to make him unspelled. However, in this production, Puck used the herb for both Lysander and Demetrius. I thought that might lead them to love Hermia if both of them were unspelled, but Demetrius still loved Helena even after Puck's use of the herb. I didn't know why, but I assumed that Demetrius went back to his state of mind before the play began, when he loved Helena. I thought the change was made because of the problem that Shakespeare's text have; if Demetrius loves Helena because of the magical power, their love at the end of the play is not real. The production perhaps wanted to show Demetrius, without the magical power, loving Helena from his heart.
