On 21 December 2024, I saw and heard Tempo 12-nen no Shakespeare by Hisashi Inoue at Nissay Theatre in Tokyo.
As the plot of the play was woven from all of the Shakespeare's plays, each scene had a climax, such as love, reunion, death, and so on. In the very last climax at the end of the play, a character brought a mirror (or a glass) for revenge, which was iconic. She brought it in front of the Richard-like villain, who had killed her twin sister and her husband, so that the villain could face how ugly and cruel he was. Seeing this scene, I thought that Hisashi Inoue, the playwright of the play, picked up "reflection" as the main keyword that Shakespeare's plays had, among a lot of themes and elements there, such as conflicts, rebellions, madness, misunderstandings, jealous, and so on. Reflection is an important concept because plays often reflect the world and characters on stage often reflect audience members or even the general public. Finding this, I enjoyed the production.
I had seen the same production in 2020. I have been studying Shakespeare, so I could find many mentions and allusions to Shakespeare's plays this time, but not all of them. I should study harder ;)

A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Other Place

2026年8月28日、ストラットフォード・アポン・エイヴォンのThe Other Placeにて A Midsummer Night's Dream を観劇(90分、休憩なし)。 On 28 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon. As it was a co-production with the Unicorn Theatre, I thought it was an accessible version for children and young audiences. The word 'accessible' has many meanings, but I say so here based on two ideas below. First, it was a 90-minute-long pe...

The Comedy About Spies at Adelphi Theatre

2026年8月26日、Adelphi Theatreにて The Comedy About Spies を観劇(2時間35分、休憩込み)。 The Play That Goes Wrong On 26 August 2026, I saw and heard The Comedy About Spies  by Mischief at Adelphi Theatre. I liked The Play That Goes Wrong (2022), and I found out that the company is performing The Comedy About Spies this year, so I was thrilled to see this play in London. Indeed, it was hilarious as (and more than) I had expected! There are many serious plays and films about spies, but I had never seen a comedy about them, so I was surprised at its funny scenes...

A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare North Playhouse

On 27 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare North Playhouse in Liverpool. There were only four actors, but it was almost a full version of the play. When an actor played two or more roles in one scene, he used props to show which character he was playing. This way of expression reminded me of Much Ado About Nothing , which I saw at The Cockpit in London in 2022. In both productions, actors played two pairs of lovers as their core characters, and they were in charge of other characters too. Then, the two...
