2026年7月10日、Pit昴にて『ロミオとジュリエット』を観劇（2時間5分、休憩なし）。
終わり方が印象的でした。例えるなら、二歩進んだ新しさ、という感じでしょうか。従来のエンディングと、それに対する最近の上演での傾向、その両方への反応と思える演出でした。
『ロミオとジュリエット』をシェイクスピアが書いた通りにやると、両家の和解で終わります。これは綺麗な終わり方ですが、理不尽なことも多い現代の視点で見ると、綺麗事にも見えてしまいます。その違和感への反応だと推測しますが、最近の上演では、両家が和解しないまま終わったり、形式的に握手はするけれど皆が睨み合ったままであったり、時には従者が突然銃を構えて皆殺しにしたり…と、様々な演出があります。それらは、現代社会への問題提起としては意義のある演出だと思うのですが、やりすぎるとカタルシスを感じることもなくただ怖い上演になってしまう可能性があります。
今回の『ロミオとジュリエット』は、その中間に位置付けられる演出だったと思います。ここからはネタバレ注意なのですが、ロミオとジュリエットの死後、まず、キャピュレットとモンタギューが握手をします。伝統的で綺麗な終わり方かと思ったところで、不穏な音楽と照明とともに序詞役が登場し、新たな憎しみが生まれることを暗示します。悲劇は繰り返されるということで、やはり最近の上演らしい終わり方か…と思ったところで、今度はロミオとジュリエットが登場します。亡霊としてか、回想としてか、見え方は観客次第ですが、二人はバルコニーの場面での台詞をもう一度言うのでした。この演出を観た時、社会が荒んでも、大人たちが汚くても、ロミオとジュリエットだけは純粋なのだと思い、綺麗だと思いました。現実味のある部分を見せられた後だからこそ、芝居ならではの美しさが際立って見えました。そういった意味で、喜劇とは違うあたたかさを感じた上演でした。
On 10 July 2026, I saw and heard Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare at Pit Subaru in Tokyo.
It had an impressive ending, which I thought was a reaction to recent productions, which themselves had included reactions to conventional productions.
In Shakespeare's text, the play ends with a reconciliation between two houses. It's a happy ending, but sometimes it seems overly happy, especially when seen in today's world with harshness. Then, there is a reaction to it - I have seen some productions without the reconciliation at the end of the play. Such a direction is understandable but less pleasant as they looked hopeless or chaotic without catharsis.
Romeo and Juliet I saw this time was in the middle of these two ways. At the end of the play, Capulet and Montague reconciled as written in Shakespeare's text, for which I thought was a conventional ending. But then, The Chorus appeared and implied endless hatred, so then I thought the direction was in live with the recent trend. And then (I say 'then' many times in this post, but) Romeo and Juliet came on stage and repeated their lines from the Balcony Scene. The contrast between hostile adults and pure young lovers made Romeo and Juliet look beautiful, without being too idealistic though.
