2022年6月18日、Cambridge TheatreにてMatildaを観劇（2時間35分、休憩込み）。ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーによるミュージカルということで、前から気になっていました。（以下、ネタバレ注意です。）
同じ劇団によるミュージカルだからかかもしれませんが、主人公マチルダの強さや存在感は、以前観劇したThe Magician's Elephantの主人公の妹であるアデルを思わせるところがありました。The Magician's Elephantについては、こちらの記事をご覧ください。
また、映画にもなったA Little Princessを想起させるところもあると思いました。主人公が想像力でお話を聞かせ、聞き手を魅了する場面や、子供嫌いの厳格な校長が登場するところなどが似ていると思いました。
Matildaは12月に映画化、来春には日本初演とのニュースを最近聞きました。タイムリーな作品をイギリスで観劇することができてラッキーでした。映画版、そして日本版のミュージカルも楽しみです。

On 18 June 2022, I saw and heard Matilda at Cambridge Theatre. It is a musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The protagonist, Matilda, reminded me of Adele in The Magician's Elephant, perhaps because these two musicals were produced by the same company. As for The Magician's Elephant, you can find how it was like from this link.
Also, it reminded me of A Little Princess, a cinematised novel. I thought so when Matilda's imaginative story attracted a listener and when I saw a stringent headmistress who hated children.
Matilda will be cinematised this December, and the musical will be performed in Japan in the spring 2023. How timely! I look forward to seeing the film version and the musical in Japan.
