2026年8月27日、リバプールのShakespeare North PlayhouseにてA Midsummer Night's Dreamを観劇（2時間35分、休憩込み）。
役者は4人のみ、それでも登場人物・台詞・場面をほとんどカットせずに上演していたので驚きました。一つの場面で二役以上演じることになる場合、役者は小道具を持ち替えることで役が切り替わったことを示したり、ローブを公爵に見立てて話したりしていました。このやり方は、2022年にロンドンのThe Cockpitで観劇したMuch Ado About Nothingを思い出させるものでした。その時の5人の役者も、今回の4人の役者も、最後の場面で二組の恋人たちがきれいに並ぶ配役となっていたので、やはり喜劇の中心人物は4～5人必要なのだと、視覚的に実感することができました。もちろん名脇役がいたり、小さな役が良い台詞を言ったりすることもあるので、どの役も無視できないのですけどね。
On 27 August 2026, I saw and heard A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at Shakespeare North Playhouse in Liverpool.
There were only four actors, but it was almost a full version of the play. When an actor played two or more roles in one scene, he used props to show which character he was playing. This way of expression reminded me of Much Ado About Nothing, which I saw at The Cockpit in London in 2022. In both productions, actors played two pairs of lovers as their core characters, and they were in charge of other characters too. Then, the two couples were on stage in the last scene of each play, so it was visually clear that the four characters were the essence of a play. Of course, I know that there are many attractive characters other than lovers, though.
