2023年1月29日、明治座にて『チェーザレ 破壊の創造者』を観劇（3時間10分、休憩込み）。以下、ネタバレ注意です。 漫画が原作のミュージカルで、ルネッサンス期のイタリアが舞台でした。物語の大半は1491年の出来事を描いていて、タイトルロールにもなっているチェーザレが主人公なのですが、過去の人物としてダンテ・アリギエーリ（1265-1321）が登場した点が興味深かったです。本作でのダンテは、出番こそ少なかったものの、存在感がありました。過去の視点から現在（私たちの現代ではなく物語の舞台になっている時代）を見つめるという語り手的な存在は、シェイクスピアの『ペリクリーズ』におけるジョン・ガワーに似ていると思いました。 (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 29 January 2023, I saw and heard CESARE Il Creatore che ha distrutto  at Meijiza Theater in Tokyo. It is a musical based on Japanese manga, and its setting is in Italy during the Renaissance period. The story showed Cesare's life in 1491, but I found it interesting that Dante Alighieri, a poet in 13th-14th century, appeared on stage as a character who lived in the past period. Although Dante in this musical had less turn than other characters, he seemed to be a big role. I thought he was important because he looked at and defined Cesare's time from the perspective of the past. Such a role reminded me of John Gower in Pericles by Shakespe...

アーティゾン美術館にて開催中の展覧会「パリ・オペラ座―響き合う芸術の殿堂」に行ってきました。パリ・オペラ座の歴史を17世紀から現在までたどりながら、諸芸術との関わりを見せてくれる展覧会でした。 オペラやバレエは、スペクタクルな舞台装置や衣装も特徴の一つなので、作品づくりの際に芸術が伴います。舞台装置のスケッチや衣装の展示がありました。 一方、作品の後にも、芸術が伴います。エドガー・ドガなどの画家たちが、舞台裏やリハーサル、客席の様子を絵画として残しているからです。それらの絵画も展示されていました。 この展覧会では、その両方の視点から芸術に触れることができました。 I visited Artizon Museum in Tokyo and saw an exhibition titled "Dialogues of the Muses: The Paris Opera House and the Arts". The exhibition focuses on the Paris Opera House, its history from 17th century to now, and its connection with the arts. Opera and ballet are spectacle, so the arts are important when thinking of stage settings and costumes. The exhibition included drawings of them and even costumes themselves. Also, after opera and ballet are performed, the arts are worth noting. Artists, such as Edgar Degas, drew how the behind-the-scenes, rehearsals, and audiences' attitudes were. 早稲田大学演劇博物館にて開催中の特別展「松岡和子とシェイクスピア劇翻訳」に行ってきました。日本人としては3人目、日本人女性としては初めてとなる、シェイクスピア劇全作品翻訳を達成された松岡和子先生の翻訳活動に焦点をあてた展示でした。 文庫本となった訳書や上演のチラシなど、様々な展示物があった中、興味を惹かれたのは稽古場で使われていた台本です。たくさん書き込みがなされていたので、「ページとステージを繋ぐ」をモットーに、稽古場に足を運んで役者と一緒に（役者にとって）言いやすい・（観客にとって）聞きやすい言葉を考え抜いた松岡先生の姿勢が窺えました。 I visited The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University, and saw an exhibition called "Words, words, words. Kazuko Matsuoka and Her Translation of Shakespeare's Plays". The exhibition focuses on Professor Kazuko Matsuoka, the third Japanese and first female Japanese translator who translated all of 37 plays by Shakespeare into Japanese. Among various kinds of exhibits, the most interesting thing for me was the drafts which were used during rehearsals. It is said that Professor Matsuoka not only translates in her office but also goes to rehearsals and often changes her choice of words in consultation with actors. The scripts with memos show her attitudes towards translating. 

国立西洋美術館にて開催中の企画展「版画で「観る」演劇 フランス・ロマン主義が描いたシェイクスピアとゲーテ」に行ってきました。ドラクロワによる『マクベス』からの一場面、『ファウスト』からの連作、『ハムレット』からの連作、シャセリオーによる『オセロ』からの連作を、版画で楽しむことができました。 特にドラクロワの『ハムレット』は、実際の上演にインスパイアされて創造されたそうです。上演が背景にあるからこそ、描かれている登場人物のポーズや衣装、小道具などは、実際の上演を再現しているのか、それとも画家の想像によるものなのか、気になりました。 I visited the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo and saw an exhibition named "Plays Enacted in Prints: Shakespeare and Goethe by the French Romantics". There were Delacroix's print inspired by a scene from  Macbeth , a series of prints inspired by Faust and Hamlet , and Chassériau's ones inspired by Othello . Delacroix's series of prints for Hamlet were inspired by an actual performance that he had seen. Then, I wondered whether characters' posing, costumes and properties in the prints were reproductions of the performance or creations from the artist's imagination.

2022年12月27日、Bunkamura シアターコクーンにて『ジョン王』を観劇（3時間、休憩込み）。以下、ネタバレ注意です。 皇太后エリナー、コンスタンス、ブランシュが印象的でした。これらの役について、オールメールキャストでの歴史劇という共通点のためか、2017年にシルヴィウ・プルカレーテ演出でほぼオールメールで上演された『リチャード三世』を思い出しました。 エリナーとコンスタンスの強くて脆いところは、『リチャード三世』のマーガレットと似ていると思いました（強くて脆い、というのが最適な表現なのかは分かりませんが、ジョンを王とするエリナーと、アーサーの王権を主張するコンスタンスが罵り合う場面は強く、彼女たちが戦争に巻き込まれて動揺したり狂ったりする場面は痛切なものだと思ったので、「強くて脆い」と書きました）。また、ブランシュは『リチャード三世』のアンと似ているところがあると思いました。 『ジョン王』は二つの歴史劇四部作に属さず、史実では時間的な隔たりがありますが、似ている点を見つけることができて興味深かったです。 (Caution: contains a spoiler.) On 27 November 2022, I saw and heard King John by William Shakespeare at Bunkamura Theatre Cocoon in Tokyo. Female roles such as Queen Elinor, Constance and Blanch were impressive for me. They reminded me of Richard III , directed by Silviu Purcarete, a Romanian director, in 2017. Perhaps this is because both of the productions were histories with all-male casting (that being said, Purcarete's Richard III had only one role played by a female actor). 改めまして、Rena Endoです。所属が変わったので自己紹介を更新します。 「イギリスに留学中の演劇好きな大学院生」を名乗っていましたが、イギリスで修士課程を終え、帰国しました。「日本で博士課程に取り組む演劇好きな大学院生」になりました。今後は観劇の感想、美術展や旅行などの趣味について、そして研究活動の報告といった投稿が多くなると思います。日本語と英語の両方で書こうと思うので、英語圏の友人にも読んでもらえたら嬉しいです。特に観劇の感想について、日本にはこんな舞台作品があるんだよ！と伝えたいです。 留学生活と海外生活のカテゴリーは、今後は更新しなくなりますが、イギリス留学中に投稿したものは残しておきます。これから留学を考えている方や、イギリスでの生活に興味のある方は、ぜひ覗いてみてくださいね。 これからもよろしくお願いいたします。 Hello, I'm Rena Endo from Japan, who like going to theatres and major Shakespeare's plays. イギリスから帰国する際、トランジットでドバイを観光しました。限られた時間での観光だったので、名所の全てに足を運べたわけではありませんが、「世界一」の多いこの都市を存分に楽しみました。 世界一の高さを誇るブルジュ・ハリファ 世界一美しいスタバと言われている、イブン・バトゥータ・モールにある店舗 世界一美しい駅と言われている、ブルジュマン駅 ドバイ・モールの綺麗な装飾は、これが通常なのかクリスマス仕様なのか… ドバイ・ファウンテンの噴水ショーは圧巻でした 夜のブルジュ・ハリファ On my way back home, I visited Dubai because my flight to Japan was not a direct flight. During the transit, I enjoyed sightseeing in Dubai. I went to Burj Khalifa, the beautifully decorated Starbucks in Ibn Battuta Mall, Burjuman Station, and The Dubai Mall. I also enjoyed the fountain show called Dubai Fountain. Although it was only eighteen-hour stay, I was glad to soak up the atmosphere of the city.
